Attending both trainings below should give you the coverage needed to pass both the CPACC and WAS certifications from the IAAP.

May 20 & 21 2025: Accessibility Basics

8am – 4pm US Eastern Time

This course is designed to provide you with a comprehensive introduction to the key principles, standards, and best practices for ensuring digital accessibility. Whether you are new to the field or seeking to strengthen your knowledge, this course will equip you with essential tools and techniques to create inclusive digital experiences for all users.
During this live training, we will explore the fundamental concepts of accessibility, focusing on the practical steps to ensure digital content and technology are usable by people of all abilities. Key topics include:

  • An introduction to accessibility standards such as WCAG, WAI-ARIA, and best practices for web, mobile, and desktop environments.
  • An overview of assistive technologies and how users with disabilities interact with digital content.
  • Legal requirements, including the ADA, Section 508, and other relevant global accessibility laws.
  • Principles of Usability, User-Experience, and Universal Design.

At the end of this course, you should be well prepared to pass the CPACC certification test from the IAAP.

This course is designed to provide developers with the technical knowledge and practical skills required to create accessible web applications that comply with modern accessibility standards. Whether you’re new to accessible development or looking to enhance your expertise, this course will empower you to build inclusive digital experiences for users of all abilities.

What This Course Covers
This course will cover essential techniques and guidelines to ensure your web applications are accessible to everyone. Core topics include:

  • Document Structure: Understanding the importance of semantic HTML and proper heading hierarchy for assistive technologies.
  • CSS for Accessibility: Leveraging CSS effectively while avoiding visual traps that could create barriers for users with disabilities.
  • Color and Contrast: Ensuring your designs meet the necessary contrast ratios for users with visual impairments.
  • Forms and User Input: Building accessible forms that are operable with both keyboard and assistive technology.
  • Keyboard Accessibility: Ensuring your website is fully navigable with a keyboard, critical for users with motor disabilities.
  • Frames and Iframes: Making embedded content accessible and usable across all devices.
  • Media: Techniques for making videos and audio accessible through captions, transcripts, and audio descriptions.
  • Navigation: Creating accessible navigation structures to help users quickly find content on your website.
  • Tables and Grids: Best practices for designing accessible data tables and grid layouts.
  • WAI-ARIA: Applying ARIA roles, states, and properties to improve accessibility for dynamic content.

At the end of this course, you should be well prepared to pass the WAS certification test from the IAAP.

How Lessons Are Organized

Each module begins with a clear set of learning objectives. You will first be introduced to the theoretical aspects of accessibility for that type of content, followed by practical discussion and code samples, where appropriate.

Each module is designed to build upon the previous one, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of accessible web development from both a technical and user-focused perspective.

We strongly recommend attending Accessibility Basics before attending Accessible Web Development. Even if you already work in digital accessibility, there is a lot of important material in Accessibility Basics that will be useful.

These trainings are scheduled to go from 8am – 4pm US Eastern Time. This time allotment provides for a fair amount of flexibility to allow for a lot of Q&A time and conversations throughout the day. Each day’s training may end early, depending on the amount of interaction.

There will be 15-minute breaks every 1 hour as well as a 1-hour break at approximately noon US Eastern Time.

This training is FREE, subject to the details provided below.

These trainings are limited to 100 attendees. Preference will be given to paid attendees first.

Only registered people can attend. Registrants will get a private Zoom meeting link via email, prior to the event.

Notes, slides, and recordings will not be shared after the training. Attendees can pay for the materials at a price of $499 per person per course.

All paid attendees will get final materials after course videos are edited, transcribed, and captioned. Paid attendees will also get online access to our training platform so they can take advantage of all updates and improvements to content.

Competitors, competitor employees, and freelancers are not allowed to attend for free.
